Still Standing

The new World Trade Center Building 7 opened on Tuesday.

You might think that CNN or other news networks would use the event as an opportunity to show the dramatic video of the collapse of its predecessor on September 11, 2001. Below, you can see some of the small fires that supposedly caused this 47-story steel structure to collapse at nearly freefall speed.

But alas, according to the recent Zogby poll, 43 percent of Americans aren't even aware that a third building collapsed on 9/11. Another 38 percent are aware that it collapsed and think the 9/11 Commission should have investigated it. A whopping 14 percent are aware that it collapsed and think the commission was correct in excluding it from the final report.

More interesting is the "eyesore" standing right across the street of the shiny new Building 7 - the vacant 41-story former Deutsche Bank AG building (pictured, below).

This building, which stood closer to the twin towers than the old WTC 7, is currently covered in black tarp because it is contaminated and uninhabitable. They can't demolish it because it would release dangerous toxins into the atmosphere, so they'll be deconstructing it piece by piece.

Notice anything unusual about this building? Like, for example, the fact that it (unlike the old WTC 7) has not yet collapsed into a pile of rubble in less than 10 seconds, even though "the collapsing south tower tore into it, leaving a 15-story gash in its facade," even though it was ten years older than the old WTC 7 (and thus presumably not as structurally advanced), even though it, unlike the old WTC 7, did not have "reinforced, bulletproof, and bomb-resistant walls" on any of its floors.

FEMA, which spent millions of your hard-earned tax dollars to investigate the collapses of all three buildings on 9/11, came to the conclusion that fire (not structural damage) caused the collapse of WTC 7, while openly acknowledging that "[t]he specifics of the fires in WTC 7 and how they caused the building to collapse remain unknown at this time. ... the best hypothesis has only a low probability of occurrence."

In summary: the original WTC 7, which was newer, stronger and further away from the twin towers, and which did not have a 15-story gash in its facade, collapsed at nearly freefall speed into a pile of rubble. Meanwhile, the Deutsche Bank AG building, which was older, weaker and closer to the twin towers, and which did have a 15-story gash in its facade, remains standing to this day.

And don't forget this part... Osama bin Laden, with the help of 19 amateurs who'd never flown airliners, orchestrated 9/11 with a laptop in a cave.

Oh, and he released another tape yesterday... so be afraid.
